Recording of the Badger Crop Connect webinar on September 11, 2024
In the September 11, 2024 Badger Crop Connect webinar, Dr. Matt Ruark discussed cover crop species most likely to establish successfully when planted in mid-September and later, as well as cover crop termination, timing, biomass accumulation, and nitrogen uptake. Dr. Ruark discussed the benefits and challenges of using cover crops, particularly in corn silage situations. He highlighted the potential for cover crops to reduce nitrate leaching and increase soil carbon, but also noted the need to consider factors such as cover crop species, nutrient management, and seeding rates. He emphasized the importance of adjusting nutrient management plans when applying manure in the fall and planting cover crops.
