From Basics to Breakthroughs:
Managing Weeds in a Resistance Era

As herbicide resistance continues to challenge Wisconsin’s crop producers and consultants, the University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension and the WiscWeeds team are hosting the 2026 Wisconsin Extension Weed Management Workshop on Sept. 2, 2026 at the Arlington Agricultural Research Station.

This year’s event, themed “From Basics to Breakthroughs: Managing Weeds in a Resistance Era,” will provide farmers, agronomists, and agricultural consultants with the latest science-based strategies for herbicide-resistant weed management.

The full-day workshop offers a deep dive into the evolving landscape of weed control, combining classroom-style learning with hands-on field demonstrations.

In addition to plot tours, a farmer panel, and the popular weed identification contest, this year’s workshop will feature two keynote speakers.

Dr. Patrick Tranel, Associate Head in the Department of Crop Science at the University of Illinois, and Greg Dahl, Director of Adjuvant Education for the Council of Producers & Distributors of Agrotechnology, will share details of weed evolution, optimizing herbicide performance, and supporting resistance management with practical, field-level decisions.

“Effective weed management is no longer just about choosing the right jug; it’s about integrated strategies and precise applications,” says Dr. Rodrigo Werle, UW-Madison Extension Weed Scientist. “This year’s workshop is designed to bridge the gap between current everyday best practices for weed control and the latest breakthroughs in resistance management research that will define the next decade of Wisconsin agriculture while also revisiting the basics.”

The event is tailored for farmers, agricultural service providers, certified crop advisors (CCAs), educators, and students, and all are welcome to join. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in Pest Management will be available for CCAs.
