This past winter, UW–Madison Extension’s Emerging Crops team hosted a four-part webinar series on emerging berry crops for the Upper Midwest. The series featured five emerging berry crops that are generating notable excitement among growers and consumers in our region: honeyberries (aka haskap), day-neutral strawberries, table grapes, elderberries, and black currants.
We invited farmers, researchers, and breeders to share their updates and insights into best management practices for these crops, with an emphasis on providing highly practical information for growers. Presenters also touched on processing, developing value-added products, marketing, and the economics of production. The final webinar was a moderated discussion on the challenges and opportunities of growing and marketing emerging berries with a panel of four diversified fruit growers in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Each webinar concluded with an engaging Q&A session. All of the recordings can be found on the Emerging Crops Lunch and Learn series webpage.
Building off the popularity of these webinars, we look forward to offering more educational outreach events related to emerging berries in the coming months. To stay informed about future events, join the UW Emerging Crops listserv.
