All hay prices quoted are dollars per ton FOB point of origin for alfalfa hay unless otherwise noted.

The information presented in this report is compiled from public and private quality tested sales and reports in the Midwest.

Hay auction data is collected on the first and third week of the month and posted by or before Tuesday. Prices quoted in this report are for “as fed” alfalfa hay.

Demand and Sales Comments

Prices are steady. Drought areas have strong prices with very tight supply. Areas with adequate hay supply there is some downward pressure on price. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady. Small square bales averaged $4.75 a bale (range of $3.00 to $7.00). Large square bale straw averaged $52.00 per bale (a range of $30.00 to $60.00). Large round bale straw averaged $44.00 per bale (range of $25.00 – $76.00). There is a limited supply at auctions.

In Nebraska, Alfalfa sold steady. Demand was very good with many livestock feeders looking for hay in a tight market.    

In South Dakota, all classes of hay have a good demand with steady prices. Available supply is limited.

In Missouri, market is slow. Some people are looking to move inventory as we inch close to green grass and spring. Prices remain steady.

In Kansas, prices are steady with moderate demand. Trade activity is slow to moderate. People are having a hard time finding hay and people who have hay are holding tight.  

 In Wisconsin, prices for dairy quality hay are steady. Overall Wisconsin has a good supply of forage. Dairy hay prices are good, but lower quality may be discounted.
