The 4th Badger Crop Connect session of 2023 features discussions on Late and Prevented Planting Options and Considerations & Small Grain Disease Management. Presenters include Dr. Paul Mitchell, UW-Madison Professor and Extension-Funded Faculty of Agricultural and Applied Economics and Dr. Damon Smith, UW-Madison and Extension-Funded Faculty in Field Crops Pathology. This webinar assists growers and agronomists with decision-making for late and prevented planting and disease management in small grains. Dr. Mitchell highlights the changes over time that will affect planting based on climate data, and presents the updated dates and risk management options to produce a profitable crop or receive an indemnity and possibly a forage harvest late in the season. Dr. Smith discusses the primary diseases of wheat experienced in the Midwest such as rust and fusarium head blight. As the wheat crop matures, Dr. Smith discusses the most effective disease prevention strategies for fusarium based on multi-state studies and emphasizes the window that is of most benefit for application of a fungicide.
