The information presented in this report is compiled from public and private quality tested sales and reports in the Midwest.
Previous hay reports can be viewed on the archive.
Hay auction data is collected on the first and third week of the month and posted by or before Tuesday. Prices quoted in this report are for “as fed” alfalfa hay.
Demand and Sales Comments
Market was steady to strong with limited sales and dry conditions in Midwest. With dry weather, first crop was good quality, but short on yield. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Limited supply at the auctions. Small square bales averaged $4.75 a bale (range of $4.00 to $7.00). Large square bale straw averaged $51.00 per bale (a range of $30.00 to $81.00). Large round bale straw averaged $48.00 per bale (range of $45.00 – $50.00).
In Nebraska, hay market was steady on a light test. Many are looking to move hay out of state.
In South Dakota, Prices are steady. Good demand for new crop, but resistance to pay current price as milk prices are low.
In Missouri, demand is good, supply is limited, and prices are firm. Concerns for drought continue in many areas.
In Kansas, prices are steady with good demand. Trade activity is slow.
In Wisconsin, prices for hay are steady to strong. Dry weather and lower yields have concerned farmers as hay supplies tighten.
