All hay prices quoted are dollars per ton FOB point of origin for alfalfa hay unless otherwise noted.
The information presented in this report is compiled from public and private quality tested sales and reports in the Midwest.
Previous hay reports can be viewed on the archive.
Hay auction data is collected on the first and third week of the month and posted by or before Tuesday. Prices quoted in this report are for “as fed” alfalfa hay.
Demand and Sales Comments
Prices remain steady with some strength across the board this week. Drought is a concern in some areas, but overall there is an adequate supply of hay at most markets to cover demand. Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Straw prices are steady. Small square bales averaged $5.25 a bale (range of $3.00 to $6.80). Large square bale straw averaged $47.00 per bale (a range of $25.00 to $64.00). Large round bale straw averaged $61.00 per bale (range of $35.00 – $75.00).
In Nebraska, hay sold fully steady. Demand was very good. Some concern with short supply of forage in state and alternative forages are being planted. In Iowa, no report.
In South Dakota, all classes of hay sold steady. Good demand for all types of hay with concerns of a tight supply.
In Missouri, hay supply is moderate and demand is light to moderate with prices mostly steady. Fields are muddy and little has been planted.
In Southwest Minnesota, no report. In Kansas, hay market prices remain steady with a limited test on the market. Movement is slow. No new crop prices have been reported.
In Wisconsin, prices for dairy quality hay are strong. Lower quality hay has a wide range in prices in the market.
