UW–Madison Extension is hosting the fourth annual Wisconsin Hazelnut Week to feature all that is happening with hazelnuts in Wisconsin. “We are getting closer and closer to having Wisconsin’s first nut crop,” says Jason Fischbach, the UW-Extension Emerging Crops Specialist, “And now is the time for growers to learn what it takes to grow hazelnuts, what the markets look like, and how to get started.”
The events are free and open to the public, but registration is required. More information is available on Midwest Hazelnuts.

August 19: Hazelnuts 101 Webinar

Hosted by Jason Fischbach, this 1 hour webinar will introduce you to hazelnut production in the Upper Midwest. We’ll cover plant selection, production, harvest, post-harvest processing, and marketing. Intended for beginning and aspiring hazelnut growers. After registering, you will be sent the Zoom link. The webinar will be recorded and made available on this site after the event.
August 21: Northern Wisconsin Field Day

Meet at the classroom building for a short presentation at 2PM about all things hazelnuts. We’ll then tour an (over)mature hazelnut planting and tour the Spooner Hazelnut Go-First Farm. This is a great opportunity for growers to see hazelnuts at all stages of production. The event is free and open to the public. Consider staying after for the annual Spooner Ag Station Twilight Tour which starts at 4PM and offers tons of information for gardeners.
August 22: Southern Wisconsin Field Day – Morning Session

The West Madison Agricultural Research Station is home to the UMHDI Joint Performance Trial with the best plants from the UMHDI, Grimo, and Hazelnut Consortium breeding programs. The plants are now mature and this is your chance to see them in action. We’ll start with an overview presentation in the classroom building and then tour the planting. The event is free and open to the public.

Savanna Institute’s North Farm is the very first Hazelnut Go-First Farm. Established in 2022, it is the largest planting of the UMHDI Adventure Series cultivars. The hazelnuts are grown at different spacings in an organic alley-cropping system. If you are interested in commercial hazelnut production in the Upper Midwest this is a must-see planting. The event is free and open to the public. No dogs allowed.
