The first Focus on Forage webinar in the 2024 series, Focus on Forage Insurance, aims to provide Wisconsin farms and agricultural professionals with current research-based recommendations regarding federal crop insurance tools available to manage production risk for Wisconsin forage growers, the differences between crop insurance for forage production versus grain production, and why forage insurance is not widely utilized in Wisconsin.
Discussions are led by Pamela Stahlke, Director of the St. Paul, Minnesota Regional USDA Risk Management Agency, and Dr. Paul Mitchell, Director of the Renk Agribusiness Institute and faculty in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at UW–Madison.

Decision-Making Strategies with Forage Insurance for Wisconsin Farms
Presented by: Dr. Paul Mitchell, University of Wisconsin–Madison
During the 2022 crop year, over 90% of Wisconsin corn, soybean, and potato production acres were covered by federal crop insurance. While forage crop production acres follow only corn and soybean in total managed acres in Wisconsin, less than 20% of these acres were covered by federal crop insurance. Why is forage insurance being utilized at such a low rate in Wisconsin? What type of forage systems benefit by reduced production risk from purchasing federal crop insurance?
