The 2nd Badger Crop Connect session of 2023 features discussions from the WiscWeeds team on spring cover crop management and early season weed control. Presenters include Nick Arneson, Outreach Program Manager, Joses Nunes, PhD student, and Dr. Rodrigo Werle, Extension Cropping Systems Weed Scientist. Nick Arneson and Jose Nunes discuss the use of winter cereal rye as a weed suppression tool. They share results of WiscWeeds research on cover crop termination timing and cover crop biomass yields required to suppress weed germination and growth. Dr. Werle discusses the importance of early season weed control with the goals of starting clean and staying clean ahead of crop canopy. He reviews the results of WiscWeeds research identifying effective herbicide burndown treatments and soil residual herbicide programs. Dr. Werle encourages growers and agronomists to consider all available weed control tools as techniques to relieve pressure on the herbicide tools at most risk of losing effectiveness through further development of resistance.
